why the name?...
"Modge Podge" is a sticky glue-like craft medium that works wonders! It's one of my favorite things to use in art projects and I can't help but love the name. I'm Mo and my future last name will be Hodge. "MoHodge". There you have it. Thanks for visiting my blog!
I'm finding myself returning to my blog regularly and obsessing over it in a way. I've become attached. Now that I understand the bare bones of how to "blog", it makes me want to do more. After all the hesitation my feet are finally wet.
arts/ technology rationale:
Technology has come a long way since the advent of computers and the world wide web. It has made it's way into the art world. Artistic skills that were once done by human hand can now be executed in multiples on the computer within minutes. Artists have not only the option of using the computer as a tool in their personal art making but now also have access to browsing the artwork of other artists for inspiration and knowledge. It can definitely be a benefit and is something we cannot escape. Technology is dominating the world. The arts are inevitably affected by this.
me: Many people refer to me as "Mo". I am a 33 year old woman as of this month. That makes me an unbalanced Libra. Originally from Connecticut, I now live in the Boston area. Currently my position in life is a graduate student, an artist and an art educator. I'm also a a bride-to-be! My life can get chaotic but somehow I manage to make it work and still find time to laugh. My energy is fueled by the support from great friends, a loving family and a loyal fiance. I'm a vegetarian who tries to maintain a mostly vegan diet despite my inconvenient allergy to nuts. The mere sight of them sends me into analphalactic shock. That's a slight exaggeration but not by far. While I enjoy eating out and trying new restaurants, I love to cook, so often times it's safer and healthier to eat just at home. Luckily my fiance, Eric, is also a vegetarian and says he "prefers my cooking over any restaurant out there". (he exaggerates) Eric and I live in an apartment with our two cats, Bacio and Lucia. Our living space demonstrates my style and passion for decor, and his love of gadgets and gizmos. Those stay mostly in his studio where he makes electronic music. Please listen to a sample of Eric's music by clicking on the link "Innerfuse". my education: I'm steps away from earning my Master's degree in art education from Lesley University. I graduated with a BFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Before deciding on going to graduate school, I studied ceramics and fine art in Florence, Italy where I earned a Post-Baccalaureate degree from Studio Art Centers International. My two year experience in Italy was a significant marking point in my life. I grew a refined appreciation for Italian culture as I learned the language, studied the art, looked at majolica pottery up close, ate amazing pasta dishes, drank plentiful wine, and met the kindest people. Most importantly through all of this, I learned so much about myself. My Italian experience molded me and will forever be a part of me. artwork: My body of work focuses on clay mosaics and tiles. Currently I am working on a series of what I call "Tile Quilts". They are decorative hanging pieces of tile wired together incorporating color, pattern and movement. These quilts have led me in a direction in my artwork where I am comfortable yet they leave me craving more. There are still endless possibilities that drive me to explore further. My inspiration is primarily motivated by patterns. Looking at quilts, tessellations, geometric shapes, and naturally occurring patterns fascinate me. The repetition of a simple shape can be manipulated into something unexpected. I often refer to my artwork as a repetition of organized chaos. Sort of like my life... current life focus: hmm...what comes first? School is my top priority as I need to just finish up this graduate program already! Teaching clay and pottery workshops to children is a wonderful opportunity that continually reinforces my desire to stay on the path I'm on in my career. Planning my wedding is equally as important. While it is inevitably time consuming, I take pleasure in hand-making everything to contribute to making this day special. As I turn another year older, I look forward to this particularly exciting year and the life that lies ahead.
